Lepto-Eryvac for Pigs

IVS revision date: 01 AUG 2007
Revised Precautions this edition
 Registered Name Lepto-Eryvac Vaccine
Composition Adjuvant vaccine prepared from formalin killed cultures of Leptospira interrogans serovars pomona and tarassovi, and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (insidiosa). The aluminium salt adjuvant increases level and duration of immunity.
Actions Immunity develops ten to 14 days after vaccination. The second dose (four to six weeks after the first) should ensure a high level of immunity.
Indications Prevention of leptospirosis in pigs caused by serovars pomona and tarassovi, and control of swine erysipelas caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (insidiosa). See product literature for further details.
Seek veterinary advice regarding the most suitable vaccine for particular areas, and to ensure correct diagnosis in the event of a suspected breakout.
Precautions Correct vaccination procedure in the field is important.
Avoid carcass damage. Use recommended injection sites. Avoid injection of animals during wet weather or under dusty conditions, as far as possible. Sterilise syringes and needles immediately before use by boiling in water for ten minutes. Avoid use of strong disinfectants on apparatus.
Inject subcutaneously only. For young pigs use the shortest possible needle not exceeding 15 mm in length. For breeding sows and boars a needle 30 to 35 mm long may be required to penetrate the deep fat layer at the base of the ear. The needle should be directed perpendicular to the skin surface.
Avoid secondary infection of injection sites. Maintain cleanliness at all times during vaccination. Take great care to avoid contamination of the vaccine, needle and internal parts of the syringe by contact with unsterile surfaces or unwashed hands. Keep needles sharp and clean and replace frequently.
Clean the proposed site of inoculation on the animal's skin by swabbing with cotton wool soaked in an antiseptic solution, such as methylated spirits.
It is important that the vaccine is kept properly mixed before and during use.
Do not inject at any other site than that recommended.
Unused vaccine may be used for up to 30 days after first opening, provided instructions for resealing are carried out. See carton for resealing instructions.
Adverse Reactions Some swelling usually develops at the injection site, and may persist for some months. Rarely, anaphylactoid reactions occur. Very rarely, pathogenic organisms lying dormant in an animal's tissues have been activated. This may lead to losses of stock, but this is rare.
Dosage and Administration Inject 2.5 mL subcutaneously at the base of and immediately behind the ear.
Primary vaccination. Previously unvaccinated animals should receive two doses at a four to six week interval. In unvaccinated herds all animals, regardless of age and sex, should be vaccinated.
Piglets born to vaccinated sows should receive the first dose at weaning (4 weeks of age) and a second dose four to six weeks later.
Booster doses. All animals in the herd, including all males, should be revaccinated either every six months, or for sows, every litter, to maintain immunity. Breeding females should be given their booster two to four weeks before farrowing.
Introduced pigs should be vaccinated twice before being allowed to enter the herd.
