These products prevent heartworm and also treat for fleas or other parasites. If your dog is heartworm negative, regular dosing with heartworm preventative will keep your cat heartworm free. Heartworm preventatives kill the parasite’s developmental stages but will not kill the adult worms. Treating a dog that already has heartworm will prevent infestation by new heartworm but will not destroy existing adults which may cause heart disease.
